Your introduction to alpine trail running
Start is at the GGUT Arena at Salzburger Platz in Kaprun. From there, the route initially leads gently along cycle paths for around 2 kilometres into the valley before the first ascent to the Birkkogel awaits. Once at the top, a fantastic view over the idyllic Klammsee reservoir is revealed.
After a short downhill section, you circulate the Klammsee reservoir before tackling the actual mountain: the climb up to Schneckenberg is around 1,000 metres in altitude. The ascent first takes you gently up to the Schneckenreitalm, then up the increasingly steep Jetzbachastensteig trail to the ‘Ast'n’. At the top of the tour, you will be rewarded with supplies at the Alpengasthof Glocknerblick – with magnificent views of Kaprun, Zell am See, the mighty "Großes Wiesbachhorn" and, of course, the Grossglockner.
From here, the route is almost exclusively on well-maintained hiking trails, descending around 1,000 metres back to Kaprun, where the finish line is once again at the GGUT Arena.
KST is the perfect introduction to alpine trail running: technically easy, 90% on well-maintained hiking trails, amazing scenery – and with its 1,000 altitude metres of ascent and descent, still a real sporty challenge.

Character of the race
KST is a good introduction to alpine trail running, but with 1,000 altitude metres of ascent and descent, it is definitely a challenge. Well-maintained hiking trails cover 90% of the KST, making the trail not particularly difficult in technical terms. Thus, mastering the trail is quite feasible for runners with some mountain experience.
Requirements
All participants must be physically fit and sure-footed in order to complete the course in accordance with the rules. The minimum age for participation is 16 years. There are no other requirements for participation in the KST.
