Rules Großglockner Ultra-Trail

1. Contract and General Terms and Conditions

By registering for a race, participants accept the organiser's General Terms and Conditions, which become an integral part of the contract between the participant and the organiser.

2. Conditions of participation and personal requirements

All competitions within the framework of the Grossglockner Ultra-Trail are running events that take place largely in high alpine terrain in the Hohe Tauern mountains, often with passages above 2,600 m. Depending on the competition, one or more large snowfields must be crossed. Poor weather conditions (cold, rain, snow) and night-time conditions pose additional challenges. Each participant must be physically fit and sure-footed in order to complete their chosen route in accordance with the rules.

For the requirements of the individual competitions, necessary qualifications, minimum age, and minimum equipment, please refer to the descriptions of the individual competitions.

The following points in particular must be observed for participation:

• Adverse weather and sudden changes in weather conditions must be expected at any time. Please note that the organiser has limited options for responding to such situations due to the terrain. The organiser will make all decisions after reviewing the facts and careful consideration. However, in case of doubt, the safety of the participants will take priority.

• Do not overestimate your abilities: All competitions are long and require thorough preparation. GGUT in particular puts the highest demands on fitness, willpower, and experience in high mountains. If in doubt when registering, we advise you to choose the shorter route first or to refrain from starting.

• Participants must have sufficient personal autonomy in the mountains to be able to cope with the typical challenges of such competitions without outside help. These include difficult outside and weather conditions (night, wind, cold, fog, rain, or snow), the stresses and strains associated with altitude, physical and psychological problems caused by severe fatigue, digestive problems, muscle and joint pain or minor injuries.
It is not the organiser's responsibility to solve the runners' problems.

• The mandatory equipment represents the minimum equipment that you must adapt to your personal needs. Important: Do not choose your equipment based solely on weight – in other words, do not choose the lightest, but the safest material. Take clothing that provides you with the best possible protection against cold, wind and snow in the mountains, thus ensuring your safety and performance.

• Do not forget that under certain circumstances – such as weather, terrain, or the situation in the competition – the arrival of help may be delayed. In such cases, your safety may depend crucially on what you are carrying with you.
Remember that during such an outdoor event, the safety of the participant depends on their own ability to adapt to the conditions and situations.

By registering, each runner confirms that they are familiar with the rules and will respect them in full together with the ethical principles listed in item 10.

The refund conditions can be found in the insurance terms and conditions.

Bus tickets:

All information about bus tickets can be found on the shuttle service page.

4. Requirements and qualification

The races in the Grossglockner Ultra-Trail are demanding running events (GGUT is an extreme challenge), most of which take place in high alpine terrain, often with passages above 2,600 m. Poor weather conditions (cold, rain, snow) and night-time add to the difficulty.

For information on the nature of the individual races and the requirements for participants, please refer to the descriptions of each race.

GGUT specifically requires proof of qualifying races: Participation in GGUT requires the successful completion of a qualifying race with at least 3 points (ITRA old and new scale) between 1 January 2023 and 31 May 2026 or proof of comparable races. The race must be specified during registration. A non-exhaustive list of races can be found on the ITRA website, using the following link: https://itra.run/Races/RaceCalendar

5. Scoring and objection

Scoring is carried out separately by age groups and for men and women in the following categories:

M U16-U18 | F U16-U18: 2009-2010
M | F: 1987–2007

M 40 | F 40: 1977–1986
M 50 | F 50: 1967–1976
M 60 | F 60: 1966 and earlier

The organiser may combine categories if there are fewer than 15 registrations in an age group.
The fastest 3 women and men in each competition will be awarded at the victory ceremony on Friday and Saturday evening. Each participant will receive a certificate to download via Datasport.

The preliminary results will be published and updated continuously on the website. Any objection against the ranking of places 1-5 per race must be submitted to the race management (via the information point) no later than 30 minutes before the victory ceremony. Objections against all other rankings or disqualifications must be submitted within 7 days of the end of the race. Objections submitted after this deadline won‘t be considered.

6. Partial autonomy

Partial autonomy applies to each competition. The number of supply stations is indicated in the elevation profiles. Drinks and/or food are available at the designated supply stations and must be consumed on site. When leaving the supply stations, each participant is responsible for ensuring that they have sufficient fluids and food with them to last until the next supply station.

Third-party personal assistance to participants is only permitted at the supply stations. It is not permitted to be accompanied by an unregistered person during the race, even for a short time. Accompaniment is only permitted near the supply stations, at the specially marked locations.

7. Mandatory equipment and bib numbers

Mandatory equipment will be checked at the start and at random along the route; without mandatory equipment, participants will not be allowed to start/will be disqualified. The required mandatory equipment is described in the respective competition.

Additional mandatory equipment may be specified by the organiser. Mandatory equipment must be carried at the start and will be checked individually there. Random checks may be carried out at any time during the race and at the finish line.

If the mandatory equipment cannot be presented when requested by staff, the participant in question will not be allowed to start or will be disqualified.

Bib numbers must be collected in person or a corresponding authorisation must be presented. Bib numbers must be worn visibly during the race.

8. Route, markings, changes, cancellation, and race termination

The route markings must be followed; additional arrows are provided at particularly unclear points. Keeping on the marked trails is mandatory. Please note: If you haven’t seen any course markings for 500 meters, turn back to the last one as a precaution.

Public roads are only partially closed and secured. The general road traffic regulations must be strictly observed when using public and agricultural roads. Some pasture gates etc. are not open; please use the steps etc. provided. Especially adverse weather conditions can make parts or large areas of the route impassable; other changes (accidents, etc.) may also occur at any time. If participants withdraw from the race prematurely, they are obliged to deregister at the information point in the start/finish area.

In case of adverse weather conditions and for safety reasons, the competition management may make changes to the route at any time. In this case, the time limits may also be adjusted. If the route is changed, timekeeping will continue as far as possible. For safety reasons, the competition management reserves the right to terminate the competition. Termination, shortening or changing of the route does not entitle participants to a refund of their entry fees.

In the event of poor weather conditions (very heavy rain or snowfall at high altitudes, extreme risk of thunderstorms, etc.), the start may be postponed by a maximum of one hours. Beyond this time, the competition must be cancelled. If the event is cancelled for any reason more than 10 days before the scheduled start, part of the entry fee will be refunded. The amount will depend on the organiser retaining the funds already used for the organisation of the event. Entry fees will not be refunded if the event is cancelled for any reason less than 10 days before the start or if the competition is interrupted.

9. Time limits and withdrawal

The start times and time limits are specified for each event. The following applies to compliance with time limits and withdrawal from the race: Participants must have left the checkpoint before the time limit. Participants who exceed the time limits will be removed from the race. No time will be recorded and no ranking will be given.

For participants who withdraw from the race or do not make the time limits, the organiser will arrange transport at all supply stations (basic and large). Return transport by cable car from Berghotel Rudolfshütte is available until 8.30 pm, with the last return transport from the lower terminus at 9 pm. Transport from the Kaprun high mountain reservoirs is also provided at intervals throughout the night.

Except in the case of injury or exhaustion, participants may only withdraw from the competition at supply stations. It is mandatory to deregister at the supply station or information point in the finish area. Participants who violate this obligation will be responsible for any costs incurred in a search operation.

10. Environmental protection and protection of alpine vegetation

Respect for the environment and the ecosystem is very important to us: littering along the route is strictly prohibited; rubbish can be disposed at the supply stations. The route runs exclusively on marked hiking trails; participants must not leave the marked trails.

11. Competition under ethical principles

Fair sporting behaviour towards other participants and staff along the route, as well as all other persons along the course, e.g. hikers and spectators, is a prerequisite. First aid: Every participant is obliged to provide first aid to injured persons and to inform the nearest mountain rescue station.

12. Penalties and disqualification

The competition management and GGUT officials may impose penalties in accordance with the following table immediately or after the competition:

Reason

Penalty

Support or supplies from a person not participating in the competition (outside the authorised zones at supply stations)

30 minutes

Leaving the specified route if this has resulted in a time advantage.

The runner will be penalised as if the doping test result was positive

Any other offence not covered by the rules will be penalised in accordance with the race management's decision. In the event of disqualification, the entry fee will not be refunded.

13. Safety and medical assistance

Mountain rescuers, medical assistants, and doctors (‘medical service’) will be on site at various checkpoints and along the route. Any participant/runner in difficulty (injury or health problems) must:

• report to the nearest checkpoint if possible, or
• call the event's emergency number (visible on the bib number and route map)

The medical service has the right to remove participants with inadequate equipment or those who are at risk of harming their health due to the race for a certain period of time or permanently. The costs of such evacuations (e.g. by helicopter) shall be borne by the participants. Medical stations are marked on the route map, and mountain rescue stations are located at critical points along the entire route.

14. Insurance

Taking out cancellation insurance is at the discretion of the participant. However, every runner must have personal accident insurance. This insurance must cover rescue and recovery costs (in particular helicopter rescue) as well as medical treatment.

The organiser takes out liability insurance for the duration of the competition. This liability insurance covers the financial consequences of the event and its helpers.
